Water shedding: Paying for air | Carte Blanche | M-Net

Johannesburg ratepayers are fed up. For years, residents have fought the City over exorbitant municipal bills. Then the municipality implemented what it calls “water shifting”: switching off some suburbs’ water to supply others. This left residents without water for hours and sometimes even days at a time. But instead of water bills decreasing, many increased dramatically. In several cases, desperate residents checked their meters and found them spinning out of control despite there being no water in the pipes. Carte Blanche investigates why scores of households are literally paying for the air in their water pipes, instead of the water they consume.

I LOVE how Carte Blanche strategically shines light on all of these issues before the national election. Well done!

When a top government official rates their service as an eight, it clearly shows how much they think they are doing us a favor.

Small story: I moved to the Netherlands a few years ago.One month, I bought a above ground swimming pool, I set it up and filled it up with 40k liters. The next day, I received a letter in the post (Yes the postal service here is excellent), requesting for me to confirm why there was sudden jump in the water usage and for me to send a photograph of my meter. The water company was concerned that there was a leak, incorrect meter reading from their side, or some other problem. That is the difference between a 1st world country and africa

Please close your water meter at the shut off valve every time the water shedding occurs to stop the air from spinning your meter.

Exact same problem here in Durban, we getting less water and electricity but the bill is gone so high and no one can explain this. I'm a pensioner and all this brings so much stress as we cannot afford these new bills....no one in the metro offices are helpful, all they say is pay your bill..

World class African City / Country... what a joke!! This rot is only going to get worse unfortunately.
  • @KandaEzana
Man, we are such a dysfunctional society...
  • Similar challenges are being faced by residents in Pinetown, KZN. My mother, a pensioner, living alone, is dealing with water shortages during the day, availability only between 22h00 & 06h00, and an exorbitant water bill of R80k for the month of Feb. This comes right after addressing a substantial R60k electricity bill, that led her to switch to prepaid electricity in Oct last year.

A World Class African City they say.
