Fulfilling A Sim Racing Dream! | The 1971 Nürburgring Gesamtstrecke Experience

Last week, Reiza Studios announced that their long-awaited recreation of the historic 1971 Nürburgring course was nearly completed, adding the track to Automobilista 2 as a release candidate over the weekend for those with the Nürburgring Track Pack DLC.

Of course, we had to give it a go. We’ve strapped John Munro in to the sim, equipped with VR, for a fully-immersive experience today around the historic layout. John is taking on the historic Nürburgring’s Gesamtstrecke, the full course, but it isn’t the Grand Prix layout down there on the south end…

If the big, northern section of the course is the Nordschleife, or “North-loop”, then this is why this section used to be called the Südschleife, or “South-loop”. This part of the course no longer exists, but thanks to Reiza and their work, we are able to experience it once more on the AMS2 platform.

John is taking the BMW M1 Procar around the full course, and while this car wasn’t yet available in 1971 (releasing initially in 1978), it may be perfectly suited for the twists and turns of yesteryear.

How does this track stack up? Watch and see as John gives you a full tour around the Nürburgring as it was back in 1971.

  • Historical musicologists research old performance practice to try and determine how did Bach hear his music hundreds of years ago… Reiza, Fat Alfie, etc are doing the same for us motor racing fans - their research using any old footage etc, hard work, and artistic ability are giving us a valuable record of what it might have felt like to drive these old lost tracks. Or, to do silly stuff like drive modern cars on old tracks, or old cars on modern tracks. What a time to be a sim racing fan! 😀

I just hope more would play AMS2
  • Drove a 2h race at Gesamtstrecke two years ago in a Jaguar Type-D. Probably the most exhausting race I've ever driven, both mentally and physically. Never drove that damn car again 😂
  • Sims will always be striving to match reality, so it's great to see an example of something Sims can do so well, that's virtually impossible in the real world.
  • This track alone has sold me on AMS2. The variety that AMS2 provides in cars and tracks makes it a must have.

Great video & a nice little history lesson. I was completely unaware of the Südschleife until now. Might install AMS2 just for this.

I’m excited to hop in and see what old school f1 really felt like not just on modern nordschlief but how even more ludicrously dangerous it was.
  • I adore historic tracks like this one. Historic Spa, old Hockenheim, historic Monza with the oval, Circuit de la Sarthe - all absolutely astonishing. Thanks to their more straightened out nature and huge elevation changes it makes racing so much more interesting even in modern cars. Especially when the speeds move beyond 300km/h. I specially love LMP1, GT1 and Group C cars on these historic circuits where they can rip close to or in excess of 400km/h. Modern tracks are all about technical corners and speed makes way for cornering. This is very sad for me. As for AMS2 - i wish there was a larger community there. But looks like their inability to decided the path they wanna take or inability to acquire licenses is what is stopping the game from gaining momentum. I mean i've had in my steam library for over 2 years and total times spent in it - 4.7 hours, half of this is probably waiting for lobbies to finish racing so i can join for the next track, only to find them disbanding after the race. The lack of multiplayer community is what is suffocating the game. And the lack of legendary cars and tracks is what keeps the community away. It has GT3 cars, but doesn't have the most popular one - the R8. It has Group C and while it has the Sauber C9, it doesn't have the Mazda 787B or the Jaguar XJR-8. GT1 class but no Nissan R390 or the Jaguar XJ220 GT. Across every class it's the same - has some popular car, but really important ones - in lacks. It feels like the game is in constant Beta state and we are testing and testing and testing without any end of this testing in sight. It should've been the successor to Project Cars 2, but it failed spectacularly. And knowing what epic duels i've had in PC2 with all the classes on all the astonishing tracks, it really makes me sad nothing could inherit that legacy. Now the entire racing community is focused in 3 games - ACC, iRacing and rFactor 2. They have 90% of the sim-racer base and it's a shame that the large audience they had with Project Cars 2 was let down and left to go somewhere else. And it even more sad because the game at its core is just extremely good. It's better than all of the top 3 most famous games, but as i said - beta feel.

The graphics was great, especially with the mist. The VR is a bit shaky for me though. Good stuff. Thanks for the content.
  • @SmokinKipper
The 250F is probably amazing around the full loop.
  • Fantastic track and great choice of car - as an offline racer, AMS2 is my go-to - best graphics / best content / great FFB / solid AI and really enjoyable physics. Mods becoming easier too.
  • @MetalSimVR
Hello and thank you for your video. 🙏 Are you shifting sequential? And if, why?
  • i am going to do it on my triple screens and crappy logitech wheel probably soon will upload the video !!!

If you exspect it Not to be dangerous, why do you put yourself in a race car in the first place. Racing is dangerous.....
