Emotional abuse is a severe form of psychological trauma. It’s otherwise known as mental or psychological abuse; however these terms refer to the same concept. Unlike physical abuse, emotional abuse doesn’t leave visible scars. That doesn’t mean that it isn’t damaging. When a perpetrator abuses a victim emotionally, they use several forms of manipulation to control the person.

Abusers break down their victim’s self-esteem to the point where they feel worthless. When a victim believes that they don’t deserve love, they are at the whim of their abuser. The perpetrator may engage in name calling, shaming, and telling the abused person that they’re unlovable. Threats are a large part of the emotional or mental abuse. The abuser tells their victim that they won’t be able to do better or find love.

The victim often hides the mental or emotional abuse from friends and family because they are ashamed. However, there are some signs to indicate emotional abuse is happening. If you think someone you love is a victim of abuse, don’t ignore that intuition. Check in with them and see if they need help. You could save a life.

It is so dificult, sometimes we get dependent on it and accept anything.
  • It’s hard admitting that they are not the person you thought they were. The heart takes a while to catch up with the head.
  • Six months ago I was crying my eyes out watching this , six months later I’m prepping for university to do my dream course 🥺💖it does get better I promise 💖

If I am brave enough to leave, I will never be in another relationship again. I can’t ever do this again.

In my experience, they don’t flat out deny ever having said something, but they reinterpret what they meant by what they said. This makes you feel like maybe you were wrong. But after so many instances of this, you begin to see the pattern of avoiding responsibility and gaslighting
  • I was emotionally abused - but I was the one who was looking up his phone and trying to find proof he is cheating and lying. Finally I found out it was true, but because of the gaslighting, I needed solid proof. Emotional abuser can make the victim act like an abuser.
  • i have learnt that emotional abusive people are so manipulative and it might be hard to identify them

Been there for 4 years. The moment he left, was the best day of my life.
  • Generally what she described is a narcissist. If you find yourself in a relationship like that. Walk away from them immediately if you can. These people will literally drive you crazy if you let them. They will literally take everything from you.
  • I used to wonder why my relationships always ended badly, then one day I realised that l was the problem. I refused to believe it at first but when I started really being honest with myself I could see that I was dishonest, selfish and emotionally manipulative. It’s sad to think how many people out there are just like me but will never have the come-to-Jesus moment that I did, and go wrecking lives with no idea that they’re a monster.
  • There's the point when you already now you already in emotional abuse relationship but you just can't get up, like hoping he could change, and you set more low and lower your own boundaries..

Just wanted to say that I made it out of a mentally and emotionally abusive marriage two years ago, and it was the best decision of my life. I'm with a loving partner who makes me feel strong and brave, and I'm thriving in my healing journey. There is hope-- protect yourselves!

WOW THIS IS SO POWERFUL. I love the point about control. A lot of women think that it'S cute when a man is jealous and wants to know everything, but it can also unhealthy and toxic.
  • The worst part is that u know ur in one, but u love and care about them so much that u feel u shouldn't or cant leave them....

Wow I am in an emotional abusive relationship. I’m too kind and caring to deserve this abuse.
