I've visited a lot of the world's most dangerous slums/hoods from India to Kenya to Venezuela - but Paraisópolis is different.
This video is one of the most raw and honest stories I've ever made, and it will give you a rare glimpse into Brazil's street life. I hope you enjoy the story, and stay tuned for more content from Brazil - one of my favorite countries in the world!

This story was a lot harder to shoot than I made it appear - we really had to battle confrontation with the “bad guys” every single moment that I had my gopro out on the streets. But in the end, I am really happy with this story because I think it gives a unique look into the street life culture and amazing people of São Paulo!! Thanks for watching - you guys are amazing for supporting my channel all of these years!! If you haven’t heard the news yet, I just launched my first book called JUST GO and I’m currently on a 10-city book tour!! The Berlin and LA events are done, but if you’ll be in SF, Seattle, Phoenix, Austin, Chicago, Miami, NYC, or Manila in the coming 10 days, then please RSVP on this link! I’d love to see you!!! www.drewbinsky.com/book

I like it when they say it's not dangerous but then say to put the camera away because its dangerous.

As a Brazilian I still don't know why every single foreigner when visits Brazil go direct to the favelas. Our contry is so beautiful, so many cultures and landscapes.

This is the Drew Binsky style I fell in love with some years ago! This is raw, talented journalism, amazing editing and storytelling, and most of all, taking risks in conflict areas to tell a powerful story.. Keep up the amazing work, Drew! 👏👏👏

It's disappointing to see yet another portrayal of São Paulo that focuses only on its challenges and perpetuates the stereotype of a dangerous and unwelcoming city. Drew's video falls into the same trap as much of the mainstream media, offering a one-dimensional view that ignores the rich and multifaceted history of São Paulo. São Paulo is a city built on the dreams and labor of immigrants from around the world. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, waves of Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, and Middle Eastern immigrants, among others, made São Paulo their home, contributing to its dynamic cultural fabric. Today, this vibrant blend is evident in the city's diverse neighborhoods, festivals, and culinary scene. Moreover, São Paulo has a storied past that includes significant contributions to Brazil's economic and cultural development. It is the heart of Brazil's financial industry, housing the São Paulo Stock Exchange (B3), and is a hub for innovation and creativity in sectors ranging from technology to fashion. The city is also renowned for its cultural institutions, such as the São Paulo Museum of Art (MASP), the Latin American Memorial, and Ibirapuera Park, designed by the legendary architect Oscar Niemeyer. While it is crucial to address and acknowledge the issues the city faces, it's equally important to recognize its resilience, its role as a melting pot of cultures, and its contributions to Brazil's identity. By focusing solely on the negatives, Drew misses the opportunity to present a more balanced and nuanced view of São Paulo, one that celebrates its complexity and spirit.

I am Brazilian. Just a little correction: It is 16% of population that lives in favelas in SP. Not 1/3. edit: 16% percent according to a 2007 study. In more recent data we have 9,4% of population (according to Mapa da Desigualdade 2022, you can checkout at Agencia Brasil website)

When you ask the local girl if you will die there, maybe her awkward laughter says it all! I have to say, Drew, you are really brave, you opened my eyes again! Those local artists are really talented and I hope their work gets noticed! Although people say São Paulo is dangerous, I saw in the video the warmth and hospitality of the locals! Thanks a lot for sharing, really great job! 👍😍🙌
