The Sainsbury’s advert makes me tear up every single time. At the time, they sold those vintage design chocolate bars in store, with the proceeds going to the Royal British Legion 🌺

The Brits and German playing football at Christmas is a true story. It happened during the 1914-1918 First World War. Not just in one set of trenches, but along several. In some places they had to remove both the German and British Soldiers from the their particular trenches because each country's men found it difficult to fight the other side after playing football with them.

The world war 1 Christmas Ad was made by true events, it actually happened in 1914 on the western front, Whats written online, The Christmas truce was a series of widespread unofficial ceasefires along the Western Front of the First World War around Christmas 19141. After five months of bloody fighting on the Western Front, peace descended over the trenches during the Christmas season of 19142. British and German soldiers on the Western Front temporarily stopped fighting to sing carols and exchange gifts3. The temporary truce of Christmas Eve and Christmas Day in 1914 has since come to be regarded as an unparalleled time of light in the darkness
  • If I’m not mistaken the Sainsbury’s Christmas Truce ad was made to mark the centenary of the actual event and was literally just promoting a chocolate bar which had proceeds going to the Royal British Legion which is a charity that helps support retired service personnel. That is the major difference I think in these UK ads, it’s that they aren’t necessarily promoting an item or if they are it’s often something that is in a lower price bracket and though we still have the ads for diamonds, high end perfumes etc, they aren’t generally the memorable ones and those high end gift ones are often repeated for a number of years and can be edited to fit different gift giving reasons i.e they aren’t necessarily Christmas specific. Sainsbury’s is a supermarket and John Lewis is a department store that has a supermarket branch called Waitrose and though none of these are the cheapest options in their fields, they do carry things that can fit any budget (as long as you are able to even have a budget that is). So they are really just saying pop in, you might just find what you’re looking for.

The Christmas truce is a powerful massage. Even sabaton did a song about it.

Moon Grandad took an odd turn when someone complained it was an old dude spying into a little girls bedroom. Branded him Moon Pervert. Some people have zero chill and need to get a grip!!

There were many Christmas truces up and down the front lines in 1914. Some lasted a few hours, others a few days. The Sainsburys advert is based on firsthand accounts of the truce at Ploegsteert in Belgium (where people still leave footballs to this day) and I have an ancestor who was right there, singing Silent Night with the Germans who were only yards away in their trench. That particular truce lasted until the New Year, when my ancestor was the first casualty on 2nd January. I'm glad he was reminded of the better side of humanity in his last days on Earth. The only bit of artistic licence in that footage is the trenches themselves- that early in the War they were much narrower and not as deep. It was noted at Ploegsteert that you couldn't stand up straight, and if you wanted to pass another soldier he had to climb out of the trench to let you through (with no steel helmet- they weren't introduced until nearly a year later!).

You know it's a good advert when you can't understand a word they're saying but the message hits you square in the feels. Go see your parents/grandparents while you can. You might never get another chance!
  • We've had some great Christmas adverts over the years, but the Sainsbury's advert, the Christmas truce has to be my favourite, that really hits the heart.
  • @TechyMantis
I have seen these adverts many times and they still make me emotional. The sign of a good ad. The man on the moon ad I think was made to also symbolize the loneliness the elderly face at Christmas.
  • @Phant0mStalk3r
I've watched a few of the Christmas advert reactions over the year and as a grown man I'm not ashamed to admit the John Lewis man on the moon advert makes me ball with tears every single time. As someone who feels very lonely quite often the idea that someone has took notice of you and see's you is very powerful. For what it's worth for anyone reading this if you know someone that you've been meaning to reach out to and catch up for a while please don't hesitate to do it. It might mean the world to them.

Yes, in the last one the dad does fake his own death and say's "How else was I supposed to get you you all here" or words to that effect.
  • @josiebridle1947
The singer in the John Lewis advert for Man in the Moon, was Norwegian Aurora Aksnes, better known as AURORA. The song was 'Half the world away'., which is a cover version of the Oasis track.
  • Your words following the Sainsburys Christmas truce advert literally says it all. I get choked up every time I see it

Hi E.B.,im a guy, 60+,living on my own here in the UK. Just wanted to wish you and all your family a very Merry Christmas and a healthy and happy New year take care, Tony ❤
  • @cjc201
A pub in my town done their own Christmas ad this year and it cost them a fraction of what these ads are but it was very good and the message was great. Made the national news.
  • @lysith3aPS5
The Sainsbury;s/Christmas Armistice ad, it's insane that that's an ad. Says more in a few minutes than most films manage in 90+ mins. Powerful stuff.
  • @yutehube4468
These are all quite modern adverts. My favourite one is the Yellow Pages advert where a guys son wants a new bike for Christmas and his dad makes him think he can't afford it so "Maybe next year", but he does get him the bike. It brings a tear to my eye every time. 1985 - Classic Yellow Pages 'bike' advert

I dont see my family most of the year,my eldest son lives 2 mins away, the younger one farther away but they dont come to see me. I lost my daughter 3 years in january and i see her youngest daughter once a week. I was in a car accident 20 years ago and i lost lots of memory so i dont drive out of my area. These ads make me cry every time i see them. I just hope that everyone has a lovely time and enjoy themselves.
