The wartime advert was based on a true story. The Christmas truce (German: Weihnachtsfrieden) 1914. I remember my father telling me when i was very young
  • No one thinks we have feelings in the UK, we hide it to save outselves, but at Christmas we just can't help it. 😊
  • @JJ-of1ir
The story about the soldiers truce during the first world war and the football game was true.
  • @TechyMantis
I have forgotten about some of these adverts and they still make me cry.

i have lived in my house since 1997 and when we moved my neighbour was 70 and every year she has come in for supper and a glass of cheer on xmas eve, i have taken her xmas dinner and tea in to her every xmas day .on boxing day i start cooking buffet food from 5 am as my house is an open house and my children and then my grandchildren would take plates of buffet in to next door ,but for the 1st time this year she wont be here and i miss her already xx
  • I think British adverts are the best, if they want you to be emotional they do it, if they want you to laugh they do it. The British are good at it ❤❤my favorite Christmas advert is the bear and the hare. lovely reaction 😊

Hi Island Girl in 1914 during WW1 the British and German troops did actually do what this advert showed they all came out of their trenches on Christmas Day and greeted eachother shook hands and then played a game of football in no mans land. They then went back to their designated trenches and blew the hell out of eachother for the next three yrs the John Lewis advert is actually telling the facts as they happened of a true event during WW1 it actually happened on Flanders Fields Belgium

John Lewis advertisements are fantastic. The Man on the Moon advert was for the Age UK charity to remind people that there are lots of old people who are lonely and is my favourite one. The Sainsbury advert is based on a true story.
  • As a child of the 50's with children from from the Windrush boat coming to my school and the open discrimination at that time in London I learnt both at school and in technical college that bigotry has no place in society any where in the world. I did think I was brighter until a West Indies lad showed me my bigotry not with any words, not with any action, not with violence, he just showed me by his actions and his quite intelligence that he outshone me technically, mathematically, and with honesty of character. I learnt that Xmas its not your skin thats important its your heart. That man does not know to this day how he changed me but he did and I thank God for the lesson one child could make on me and now the generations of my family here and in the future following. He like me will be in his 70"s now where ever you are now, heaven or earth well done sir one very important life lesson learnt. Your showing of the adverts brought it all back.

When advertisers take a more wholesome approach to Christmas adverts and keep it about families and people sharing the Christian spirit of good will and kindness to others during this religious festival, it sends a positive message out we all embrace with gusto and pass on to others. I am unimpressed with this years UK Christmas adverts, but hope in future we can see more traditional adverts being reintroduced to remind us to remember those less fortunate than us.
  • Thank you for these beautiful adverts. I must admit that the creativity of the Brits is really the tops. These were really tear-jerkers. Happy Christmas to you and your family and friends. Where there is love, there is happiness.

John Lewis Christmas Adverts get you every time. They are the best. They remind us to care for others, especially at Christmas. Don't forget your loved ones
  • The Edeka one gets me every single time... This year even more as my grandpa passed away in January. During Christmas time my grandparents always were the center of all family festivities. Grandpa held this tradition up after Gramma left us - now he's gone, too and Christmas will never be the same again.😢

The boxer dog in the advert as ‘Buster’ was a super dog his real name was Biff. He used to do appearances for our boxer dog rescue charity here in the UK. Sadly he is no longer with us, he was ill and passed away a just over a year ago. ❤💔 x

Aww my Island Girl I can see that this one got you emotional ❤❤
  • @stonkr
The John Lewis penguin one has been my favourite since it first aired. They're 'just toys' but to him they're real.

Your laugh and even the little snort is so refreshing, just love you, keep going girl, you make me smile, from an elderly lady in the UK.

The premiere of John Lewis's Christmas ads have always been appointment to view. The Sainsbury's wartime ad, based on a documented event in which forces declared a truce that Christmas Eve and played a game of football (soccer) in No Mans Land, is an unforgettable all-time classic. The elderly father one, well, anyone who doesn't cry at it can't have a heart. 💔 My personal favourite is not there though. Waitrose's 2016 advert with the girl and the robin. So many other wonderful Christmas adverts from Britain and the rest of Europe over the years are out there for you to explore. I agree that the way these ads are done here are what is called "old school". All about what it is really about and less about the commerciality, even though the intent is to get you to buy from them.

Great stream island girl, And to all who have someone this Christmas. Let them know that they are loved and that you appreciate them, Cause we never know when we're going to lose them, So let them know, And to all who celebrate. I wish you all nothing but the best this Christmas, You all stay safe 👍
