It tends to be called the "Forgotten Generation" and today we'll see if that's really the case. Hoenn laid the groundwork for so many crucial aspects of the pokemon anime from rivals, to contests to elevating the battles, Hoenn tried a lot of new things that ended up working out really well! So let's dive into the Advanced Generation anime!

I have a lot of Nostalgia for this season, the Ruby and Sapphire games are among my favorites. As I've grown older, I've come to appreciate this series more.

    All thanks to Harrison!

Incredible, as always. I really I agree with a lot of your major points, so I don't have too much to say in this comment. I feel like AG falls in a weird spot because kids nowadays likely just haven't seen it, and anyone who goes back to rewatch it will pick up pretty quickly on how this series was a bridge between OS and DP. It doesn't have that same nostalgic charm as OS, and it isn't as polished as DP. I think this is a big part of why it's considered a "forgettable" series, which I guess is slightly different from the term you used, "the forgotten series." If you watched AG all the way through, there's no way you can forget it, because of how many memorable characters and moments it has!

Thank you for this review of the Advanced Generation series. The Advanced Generation series really changed the formula for Pokémon with Ash catching only one starter Treecko in contrast to Kanto and Johto where he got all three starter Pokemon. I consider Ash to be a gym leader level trainer in the Advanced Generation series and I like how Ash started taking on the mentor role in the Advanced Generation series with him mentoring May. I like how Ash used his older Pokemon in the Kanto Battle Frontier especially his Kanto starter Pokemon Bulbasaur, Charizard and Squirtle. I think Brendan and Wally would have made great rivals for Ash in Hoenn. Ash really grew in the Advanced Generation series through learning how to not be overconfident and how to be humble.
  • Beautiful video as always! I’m glad the Advanced saga is getting more appreciation! Sure, Advanced has some of its flaws, but there’s plenty of good to it too! Battles were quite good, Ash’s hard-work ethic and commitment to his Pokémon training is rewarding to see, the contests were wonderful, Team Rocket is always a joy, etc. You also summed it up perfectly about Ash’s development and complex in the Advanced generation! I honestly hadn’t exactly thought of Ash’s rival being with himself, personally. But you also pretty much summed up how I felt about Ash! As much as I like Ash, his arrogance and entitlement in Advanced definitely rubbed me in the wrong way. I know he wasn’t always like that, but whenever he was, it definitely took me by complete surprise, cause Ash is usually nice and supportive. Now that I think about, Ash’s character in Advanced, until he’s humbled around Vanity Affairs, kind of reminds me of Gary from the first season. Capable and aspiring, but unbearably arrogant, needed to be taken down a peg or two. Gary has quite the influence and impact on Ash, influencing and kind representing both the best but also the worst aspects of Ash. Ash at first in the Advance saga had honestly started out like Gary when they first started their journey. But much like Gary, Ash was eventually humbled, and reminded that no matter how much progress they’ve made, there’s always more room to grow! More places to go, trainers to battle, to learn from, etc. It paves the way for the rest of Ash’s journey going forward excellently.

I was obsessed with this series as a kid. i watched alot on kids wb along side megaman nt warrior axess. thought i only saw a few episodes of the fist season like ash getting taillow, treecko team rocket releasing arbok and weezing. i loved this series even i wasnt a fan of new voices in the battle frontier and i wish the anime referenced AG more outside the battle frontier. May was my favorite Pokegirl before serena and Hoenn was my favorite region before Kalos
  • It’s definitely a cool similarity! But I think it was just a coincidence. I mean sure, there was some future generation foreshadowing before AND after, but I think this one is sheer coincidence. I still think Team Aqua and Magma needed better development though, and Maxie and Archie needed to be introduced earlier, especially to see who Archie was before he got a hold of the red orb and the orb started twisting his mind.

Great video. You totally nailed both the good and bad points about this series. I love advanced so much. I actually never watched it as a kid, only the original series. So I have no nostalgia clouding my opinion But when I did decide to watch it in 2020, I was blown away. It was like being a kid discovering pokemon all over again Ash being on top of his game and May having her own goals and development too was just awesome
  • Brock's Hoenn catches feel like they wanted them on Misty's AG team before deciding they didn't want her in Hoenn but still wanted the Pokémon on the team somehow
  • @DigiRangerScott
18:12 I love how even though in Ash’s final episode the world is still growing, Gary does let Ash relax insofar as not forcing a challenge on him. Make it more of his decision as to what to do next.

I just discovered your channel today and I left a subscribe. This was an excellent review. I consider this series underrate. One day I gotta rewatch the Advanced series. 😄
  • Pokémon Advanced Generation Anime is great but there are a few things that I wished that the series had improved before the finale had end liked: 1.I do wished that May have caught six Pokemon during her Hoenn journey just like Ash and have them all evolve fully before she compete at the Hoenn Grand Festival, the same goes for Kanto Grand Festival too. I Still don't understand why she had left her Beautifly and Skitty back home in the Hoenn region even those I've already know why, but seriously she should have brough them along to her new journey in the Kanto region as since she continue to travel with Ash again and since she was planning to enter Pokemon contest in the Kanto region or at least try to catch more Pokemon in the Kanto region before entering the Kanto Grand Festival . 2.The Pokémon Hoenn League is alright although I don't understand why would Ash stick with his Hoenne Pokemon team during the League rather to used some of his old Pokemon to Swap like he did in the Johto league. Because using the same team over and over to the next round someone would seen his battle strategies and might used it against him and that would be bad. Also half of his Hoenne Pokemon still haven't evolve fully like Ash's Grovyle and Corphish, if they have then Ash would have stand a chance to win the Hoenn League Ever Grande Conference. 3.The same goes for Pokémon Battle Frontier series like I do wish that Ash could try to catch more Pokemon during his Battle Frontier journey since he's back in Kanto I though could at least catch some Pokemon that didn't get yet like Rapidash, Arcanine, Eevee (3 times to evolve Flareon, Jolteon and Vaporeon), Electabuzz, Gyarados, Sandshrew, Seaking, Beedrill, fearow , Scyther or retrieve his Pidgeot that he promise to return for. I'm glad that Ash's brought back his Phany back to his team and evolve to Donphan so I though he could do the same for his Bayleaf, Cyndaquil and his Totodile because they do deserve to evolve during their absent but sadly that never happen but at leastin Pokemon DP: Sinnoh League Victor his Cyndaquil did evolve into Quilava so that's fine by me.

Awesome review! Can’t wait to see the Diamond & Pearl review 😊 Can’t wait to see how your review’s view of Nando 🎶
  • @Scott-ws8yt
Nice, the only thing I'll disagree with is you said the Contests felt like a backseat to Ash's Gyms (at least at first), and that's not really true. The writers made 8 Contests in Hoenn and 7 in Battle Frontier, which was equal to the same number of Gyms and Frontier Brain battles Ash had each series. Ironically enough they actually made more Contests in AG than they did in DP, since Dawn only competed in 11 Contests in DP, whereas May gets 15 (as well as a second Grand Festival as well). Now obviously Ash's Gym plot started first because the Contests were new and had to be slowly introduced in the series, but the Contests got the same screentime as Ash's quest, and remember many of May's Contests were 2-parters as well.
  • Hm, fair and valid points and opinions, personally I think this was a Okey Series, you covered this very well, I will look forward to see you cover Sinnoh. By the way, do you know of Pokémon: Festival of Champions?
