Randy. Marsh. Has a character in TV history ever undergone a transformation like Randy? Over the course of 23 seasons of South Park, Randy has gone from a simple father and geologist, to an obsessive weed farmer who literally caused the ongoing pandemic. A truly WILD evolution. But honestly, if you follow Randy’s journey over these 23 seasons, the funny thing is that this development… actually feels really natural, and earned! He didn’t just BECOME an obsessive oaf one day, they slowly introduced certain quirks to Randy’s personality and those quirks evolved and developed over time. Randy went from being a moderately utilized secondary character to, arguably the star of the entire show. And while there are some people who take exception to Randy’s presence at the forefront of South Park these days, I think the journey itself is a fascinating one. So let’s comb over 23 seasons worth of the man with absolutely no Tegridy and explore the evolution of Randy Marsh.

I feel like as Matt and Trey grew up, they stopped relating to the kids and started relating more to Randy.
  • “Randy your balls!” “I know smoking right in front of a cop” That line is so underrated 😂

One amazing thing about South Park is how consistent the characters are after almost two dozen years. They aren't the same static characters, but adapt with he times yet are still the same and have progression.

randy marsh going from upstanding academic to fully fledged weed guy disappointing his family is SUCH a mood i love representation in television
  • It’s no shock that Randy is more prominent. I’m sure when Trey and Matt started the show they saw themselves more as the boys but now 20 years later they see themselves more as the parents.
  • "Did everyone enjoy the special?" "No Randy, only you did" "Well that was my target demographic anyways..." This is perhaps the most South Park line ever written in the history of South Park, ROFL.

I’m amazed he never became a politician or tried to gain power, he has incredible luck and a supernatural ability to get people to follow him.

“Sad regretful father who’s afraid his best days are behind him..” I recognise myself in there, and I think it’s the case for most fathers

"What seems to be the officer problem?" still cracks me up.

Went from normal geologist to full blown Villain man of the town.

The line “What seems to be the officer, problem” will never get old for me.

I've ALWAYS loved how he says 'Shelly' 😂. I know no ones asked, or even cares, but my favourite characters are Butters, Cartman & Randy.

I like that Randy’s evolution mirrored Trey and Matt’s evolving perspective of themselves and their work. As they aged they used Randy as their voice more and more.
  • Randy took so much control in the later seasons that genuinely felt pretty jarring to me when he only appeared at the end of the vaccine special .

I love that moment in the Batdad episode when Randy was in his punch drunk state and he imagined Sharon cheering him on despite all her protests against his fighting
  • One of my favorite speeches of his was how drugs were bad because they makes being bored ok. Then he goes and pulls this shit on us.

As a geologist myself, I can't understand how you can be having enough of this. It's the best job in the world.

Randy moving out to the weed farm is also great meta-commentary on the idea of modern life in the city sucking and wanting to move back out into the country. Randy is exactly the type of person who'd feel that way as he's been chasing the grind for his whole life and even when finding success, it never made him truly happy. So to find fulfillment, like many people who feel like him, he buys a small farm out in the middle of nowhere with his family.
