A transcript of this podcast and more information about Rob Lustig is available on the website of the Duke World Food Policy Center at wfpc.sanford.duke.edu/podcasts/what-sugar-and-zero…

Today we speak with an expert on sugar and things meant to replace it. The stakes are high. Very high. Sugar consumption in the population is astronomical and so is the use of sugar replacements. Knowing the impacts of both could help experts provide dietary guidance and help consumers make decisions. Dr. Robert Lustig is Professor Emeritus of Pediatrics in the Division of Endocrinology at the University of California, San Francisco. He specializes on the regulation of energy balance by the central nervous system; body weight regulation, appetite, metabolism, and is very well known for his work on sugar and their substitutes and on policies aimed at improving the diet of the population. A YouTube video on the effects of consuming sugar called “Sugar: The Bitter Truth,” has now been viewed 24 million times.

Fun fact: For every pound of sugar consumed in the United States, we spend twenty-five dollars on medical treatment for illnesses caused by excess sugar consumption.

What was not mentioned, was sugar addiction. Some of the comments below are clearly driven by addiction. No amount of damage to your Mitochondrial System, or your gut microbiome, is acceptable. I know a little bit about sugar addiction. I have lowered my A1C from 13.8 to 5.7 by cutting out all sweeteners. It was definitely a path of addiction recovery.

We are so fortunate to have access to great scientists like Dr. Lustig. This has changed me. I have been drinking Coke Zero daily and am going to stop today.

When I was in college, I wrote a Research Paper on the dangers of Aspartame. One of the issues, besides the breakdown byproducts, was that Aspartame competed from the binding sites for Serotonin which helps to regulate Gastric motility. What I found in my research was this: Consuming foods or drinks containing Aspartame restricted Serotonin and thereby slowed Gastric Motility. This in turn, allowed food to stay in the stomach and Small Intestines longer, thereby resulting in weight gain. My research did not show the quantity of Aspartame consumed, but rather, dose-over-time effects. The longer someone consumed Diet drinks or foods containing Aspartame, the more likely they were to gain weight.

I had been doing an 18 week strict Low Carbohydrate / No sugar Intermittent Fasting diet. I aimed to reverse Pre Diabetes, reverse Liver Enzymes and Cholesterol. I don't know if I have reversed the Pre Diabetes yet, but I have fully reversedmy Liver Enzymes and Cholesterol levels back to normal. As a bonus I also lost 50 pounds and I have not felt so good or had more stamina during this time for years. However I then started to eat Dried Fruit for a period of 2 weeks. I couldn't believe how ill it made me feel, nill energy and I really wasn't eating that much. Now I have to start over all over again and try to get through the sugar cravings which have come back. Also I stopped drinking diet coke after being addicted to it for years. They should ban it. It is so addictive like sugar. Best thing I've done. I worry about the damage that it has done to my body and teeth and the cancer scares. Wish I had stopped it years ago.

I'm 4ft10in. When I had my first child friends suggested aspartame to replace sugar ,to help me lose weight.I kept using artificial sweeteners throughout my life. IT DESTROYED my gut flora along with my intestines 😢My G.I.doc said that I would die if I didn't let him remove my colon!!!!.... I refused & studied on internet for a natural solution.I studied in India...ayurvedic medicine. Still alive at 76....eating all natural.❤😂🎉

My wife and I are closer to 80 than 70 but cut down on our sugar consumption maybe 20 years ago for what reason, I don't remember. I started watching Dr. Lustig video's a couple weeks ago and started adding a 3 to 2 ratio of soluble to insoluble fiber as a result. This is the level of health. I encourage everyone to learn about how important fiber is. It is more than cleaning the colon, we have all heard. It is about metabolic health. Health at the cellular level prevents the big eight of diseases.

Thank you for inviting Dr. Lustig. Would you please remove that yellow line that refers to the vibration of the sound. It is so distracting especially for those who have some vision issues due to brain injury..thank you

I am wildly addicted to diet soda -- for years, it's just so hard to let go! I gave up the sugar, I stopped binging, I lost 200lb with keto and intermittent fasting, but my big mission now is to truly free myself from ALL sweets and processed pleasure foods!

We don't have to replace sugar, 'cause we do Not need any dietary sugar, at all. What we need: sunlight and natural diet. (mission impossible tho')
  • @magistraliss
It seems that some folks in the audience can’t accept that even other alternatives like stevia can do damage. Preaching to the deaf…
  • @GM-cf6jv
Dr. Perlmutter interviewed Dr. Bickman on a utube video praising Allulose as a safe and somewhat beneficial natural sugar (found in small amounts in some fruits). Dr. Lustig states it has same downsides as the other “artificial “ sweeteners. So whats the correct analysis?
  • @MrWingiii
Eat your stevia around your meals …otherwise drink water or sparkling water with lemon or apple cider vin
  • Absolutely agree that things need to change but find it appalling and fascistic personally the way proposed to do so. Not telling anyone and forcing it because someone says it is a better idea. Education is what is needed. Teach people proper eating habits. Don't force them to fit your findings. Science grows and we learn new things every day.
