To clear up the continuity errors R6-H5 R7-A7 and R7-D4 are just the names of the astromechs and not their actual model line A Lucasfilm executive stated that the names could be part of a longer serial number so R7's full number could be R2-R7-A7- etcetera etcetera it most likely that the droid itself is just another R2 unit and Dave Filoni most likely named other droids different numbers because having a bunch of droids being called R2 and R4 would be confusing as hell since when we hear R2 and R4 we think of R2-D2 and R4-P17
  • When I first saw Star Wars (no episode IV back then) as a kid I instantly fell in love with R2. He was my first action figure. Happy days.

You can't hate the R series of astromeks. While i love the BB and BD line of droids, they can't really beat the versatility and sheer determination of an R2 unit, or any other of the R line of astros. I personally would love to have an R2 unit alongside a T7 droid from the Old Republic era, like the one one of the most famous smugglers of that era had. I can't remember the name of that smuggler, but he did help Satele Shan and that soldier to escape over Korriban, or Moraband if you prefer Canon over Legends
  • Tbh I love that starwars Droid market is so variable, half of models seem to be "see if it sticks" and the rest are the result of aftermatket customization which for tabletop games in setting result in some fun Droid chars people can make. My favorite char I created for a "scum and villany" smuggler and bounty hunter campaign was a prototype corporate collaboration project at the end of the clone wars...Between baktoid, holowan, and czerka Corp. It was "suposed" to be an "elite, but recource effective" assasin Droid to be used to hunt down the remaining jedi, or dispose of high value targets... It was a commando Droid with upgraded servos, several hidden weapons and a hidden compartment for its primary weapon system, and upgraded sensor package (more emotive eyes), but using a prototype of the more advanced IG series processors and internals...czerka basically just made the weapon which was a custom made, limited run folding slugthrower marksmen (more like a anti-material) rifle/scatter gun combi-weapon of the finest quality (my char was VERY attached to it and often hated using other weapons if forced to) Long story short...his limited line (like 10 droids) that was sent to be "tested" by the rising empire was also home to a number of other droids to be "tested" for capabilities in the new imperial military market...including IGs...which subsequently went rouge, killed the crew and left but not before "disposing of the competition" by dropping all the storage pods of my chars droids out on some backwater world to burn up in atmosphere... My chars pod was left in the dunes until the end of the empire, and subsequently found by some scaver, whom sold it not knowing what it was to the party... Really, really fun char to play. Not a psychopathic Droid...but certainly a sociopath that pushed for "effective, efficient decisions" and "recource management"...though clearly hid a almost disconcerting desire to "prove there worth...often by keeping track of kills both numerically, and exceptional cases)
  • R2s and beyond are such great companion droids. They are loyal and like a Swiss Army Knife of tools for the Star Wars galaxy. Plus they make great copilots.
  • @BadgerRobot
I suspect the Jedi custom versions had their own product line numbering system, hence the numerous issues with Jedi astromechs being off.
  • Addendum: R4-P17 was actually part of an experimental series that was basically just a head and a servo base, attached directly into space fighters like the Delta-7 interceptor. She did end up getting a standard astromech body, however.

I am absolutely in love with the cone-headed R4 series. I was at galaxys edge 3 weeks ago and built my very own and named him R4 D12.
  • The R2 series will be my favorite of the R-Series astromechs with the R4 being a close second. R2-D2 is a legend among astromech droids. If I had one, it'd probably be an R4 unit with an R2 head, have dark blue markings, and named R4-L13 or "Lucky." Or at least, that's one idea for an astromech if I could own one.
  • @CAPTDILLIGAF
If any of this came from the EU, Disney de-canonized all of that. 😢
  • @_Y.J
Astromech naming in the universe is so annoying, like Ashoka's R7 is an R2 ? did the Republic have prototypes in r2 casings?
  • @cujoedaman
R1 droids give me a real 'dalek' vibe :D
  • I really like your Star Wars Astromech droid video if I had a Droid I think it will be a BB series and I'll call it BB 920
  • If I had a choice in the matter, I would go with an R2 unit. But a common saying for starfighter pilots was, "Any asrtomech is better than no astromech." I would be happy with any R series that could fit in a starfighter.
