About the Movie:

The Raid 2: Berandal is a 2014 Indonesian action crime film written, directed and edited by the Welsh filmmaker Gareth Evans. It is the sequel to the 2011 film The Raid and stars Iko Uwais, Julie Estelle, Yayan Ruhian and Cecep Arif Rahman. The story is about a special forces officer Rama (Iko Uwais) who is sent undercover to expose the corrupt police officials colluding with the crime families of Jakarta's criminal underworld. Like Evans' previous films Merantau and The Raid, the fight scenes showcase the Indonesian fighting style of Pencak Silat.

About Hammer Girl (Source Wikia)

Alicia, better known as Hammer Girl (portrayed by Julie Estelle), is a supporting antagonist in The Raid 2. She is a deaf-mute assassin who is often accompanied by her brother Baseball Bat Man. Her left eye is ruined and she has a large scar over where it should be. She wears sunglasses to hide this.

Fun Trivia (source IMDB):

Julie Estelle had zero background in martial arts and she had to learn Silat from basic for 6 months before she started shooting her fight scenes.

According to Gareth Evans, the idea of "Hammer Girl" came to him from his first feature film, Merantau, where one of the silat styles featured is called "tiger style" because the hits are made with the palm of a hand while the fingers are kept in a claw-like position. Evans wanted an "extension" of the tiger style where a weapon would be used, and the only weapon he could think of was a claw hammer.

Although The Raid 2 uses a native fighting style of Indonesia called Pencak Silat, the martial arts share similar roots to the Filipino Marital Arts of Kali in which Logan is an expert of.

Welcome to our first breakdown from The Raid series! If you are a martial arts fan and you still haven't seen this film, make sure to watch both The Raid: Redemption (2011) and The Raid 2: Berandal (2014) right after you share, comment and like this video lol (Honestly, it really helps us!). With that being said, I hope you enjoyed this breakdown and as always, let us know which fight scene you want to see us breakdown next! Do you prefer The Raid 1 or The Raid 2?
  • @stlurz
Chad's face when Logan talks about bone smashing is priceless.
  • @Si_nengatcha
I watched an interview with Julie, and she mentioned that during pre-filming, she had to feel comfortable with the hammer and considered them as her hand extensions. To do that, whenever she went for jogging, she brought her hammers along. It added to her weight while jogging plus made her used to with the hammers...
  • 10:17 "There's something about drumming... that's very soothing." Hammer Girl drumming a guy to death: "Ah..... soothing..."
  • I like the take that she chose hammers as weapons because of the physical feedback to compensate for her deafness. I always had the impression, that she and the Baseball Bat Man are really close to each other and their non-traditional weapons indicated to me, that they don't have a traditional education and learned by surviving from a young age with weapons they more or less just found. The audio commentary confirms this. I love how Gareth Evans communicates such minor details without having his characters just blurting them out and how he gives some depth even to his evil minions. Baseball Bat Mans reaction to the death of his sister humanises her. She becomes a person who has loved, who was loved and who didn't want to die. This is what sets Evans violence apart from most other action movies. The action is extremely brutal and exciting, but the violence isn't glorified. When Rama killed the assassin in the end, he isn't shown in a victorious hero pose, he's just exhausted, staring into the distance, horrified by the violence, he inflicted. Evans stories are about people who try to escape from violence, but the only mean they ever had, is violence. So his movies - and also his TV show Gangs of London - become survival horror, where the only way out is further in, hoping to stay alive long enough to see the light.

Logan: I want to shatter, splinter bone. Chad: O__O
  • @joerig96
The great about Julie Estelle is she have not background in ANY martial arts , so she learn and practice REALLY HARD just for that scene
  • @hadinuman6699
Also, fun fact: the movement of Hammer Girl is actually inspired by Silat, particularly from the style of Cakar Harimau (lit. Tiger Claw). The director Gareth Evans really like this particular silat style and tried to come up with a weapon that can replace the "claw hand" used in in the silat style and thus decided to use the claw part of a hammer. Hence why most of Hammer Girl's finisher relies on the claw instead of smashing with the blunt side.

one of the things that i like in this kinda movies (the man from nowhere, the raid 1-2, donnie yen movies, tony ja movies and specially jackie chan movies) is that unlike amarican action when the character ALWAYS stands his ground or advances, the characters in these movies knows when to step back, when to jump back, when to switch to defence for a while or even when to run away for a few seconds
  • @phantomkitten73
If you guys thought Julie Estelle was cool here, then you should see her fight scene in The Night Comes For Us. I'd very much love to see an analysis on that one.
  • @justinstacy57
I've been waiting for this one ever since you guys announced it. I know movie choreography isn't always a slice of realism, but as a disabled guy who loves martial arts, I like to see some disabled film characters capable of holding their own. She's one of my favorite parts of this movie.
  • @thomashesse351
Silat fighter here - I love that you guys broke down that scene, and gave so much input. The Raid series is incredible in terms of realistic fight scenes! The individual move sequences usually all show high skills and plausible action/reaction. These are movies though, so the only really unrealistic thing in the fight scenes is the total duration of the fights (I'm sure you would never have Karambit Fight in a kitchen that lasts 7 minutes). Please keep going with these videos, which focus more on realistic scenes than on total BS from 80s Action Movies. Personally I take so much more valuable input from you guys when you discuss the realistic parts.
  • @joshcollins5362
The more astounding part of her character is when you learn as to why she always wears the glasses. I knew she was gonna die, but damn she was one helluva good villain.
  • @cheesedudel6576
If I weren't already a fan those first 4 seconds would've sold me on you guys.
  • @jnhzrk6841
Excited for this. Don’t know how well it’ll stack up to the Star Trek analysis, but it’ll be ok compared to it I guess.
  • @uzielbernal515
The character Hammmer girl was deaf, so her and her brother did sign language to talk to her. I think he said As usual in the fight scene with him and hammer girl against rama
  • @XDD50Hz
I guess a great aspect of the scene is that unlike other one-versus-multiple fight scenes, it happens in a subway train so with the tight corridor the gang has to come in one by one. That basically “solves” the issue where in that multiple enemy scenario those enemies can gang up on you all at once and you’re in a clear disadvantage instantly
  • I'm working to become a novelist and describing action sceneshas always been my weakness, but your combat breakdowns are such a big help with that ❤ thank you guys for being so awesome
  • Love the further breakdown using the real hammer and the slab of meat, really shows how that move couldn’t have realistically happened. Awesome breakdown guys!
