(I checked the wikipedia entry and as far as I can tell, it's pretty solid, so I Know it's typically not a good source to give but in this case, if you don't wanna hunt down singular sources, it's a good compilation.)

Thank you for making this video, I relate to the topics in it, and it helped me put words to what I was going through. I currently have no relationship with my father, whom Ive only recently realized was abusive (both physically and neglectfully) I have since cut him out of my life, and though I am not ready to forgive him for his actions/inaction, because I watched this video, I can start moving in that direction for my own sake. Thank you @Oceaniz for all the videos you make, you make a difference.
  • I think Endeavour is so popular because he is a well-written character, not necessarily because people "like" him.
  • The character with the fire quirk causes the biggest flame war, who could have guessed it?

...I'm going to be straight. I like endeavour because I see myself in him. I've been a shit person most of my life. Hurt more people than I think I can say. Left people worse off than I've found them. I can't blame my childhood, my struggles with every substance addiction under the sun, or anyone in my life. I've been a terrible person. Endeavour as a character; doing horrible things, thinking on them, regretting them and trying to solve them. They are what told me 'this is you. This is the scum you are now'. Because I saw myself in Endeavour, I've taken steps to fix my mistakes. I've been drug and alcohol clean for a year now, and I've tried to rebuild my bonds with the people in my life. Some have forgiven me, and others never will. I'm not a good person, but like endeavour, I don't want to stay that way. Edit: thank you for the kind words. It's been two years now, and I've remained completely sober and drug free. I've gotten a paying job in a retail store, and I've started talking to my parents again. I'm getting there Edit 2: I think this is the last time I'll check this comment. My life has gotten as good as I think it should get. I've fixed my relationship with my family, been promoted at my job and I'm in a relationship with a beautiful and smart woman. I know they just seem like comments, but I am so thankful to have gotten so many nice comments from all of you, even though we've never met. Thank you

  • @SoundWave3214
Fan reactions: Endeavor: Abused his kids. - Hated. Vegeta: Slaughtered countless people for "fun." - Loved
  • I feel people have these very strong feelings towards Endeavor because abuse is a common and realistic problem, where as a mass murderer psychopath isn't. This added to the portrayal of abuse being fairly realistic, and the fact that Endeavor is not a villain like in your examples, but is presented as a hero and a protagonist.... yeah I can see why he is so controversial.

It's sad that people cant see the nuance in Endeavour's character. Endeavour's ongoing arc really hit close to home for me seeing that I come from a family of 5. My father verbally abused me often as a child and unnecessarily punished and hit me, with my mom not saying anything to interject. I grew up with so much distaste for my parents I moved out at 18 and it wasnt until I turned 20 last year that my father and mother reached and actually had a heart to heart talk with me, and at that I've never spoken with my parents on a personal level. Them trying to be better and openly care for me was difficult to process at first. It doesnt absolve them of how much they scarred me as a child, but I can't bring myself to hate them these days. I actually have a somewhat healthy relationship with them even though I can't forgive them, I understand them and of course I want to seem them better themselves as people even if for a couple of years I refused to accept there actions of change. They're people, people who were scarred as children too and left incomplete so they lost sight of what it was to parent. Just like endeavor. Him not being redeemable is plain wrong, and you're denying some of the strongest writing in recent memory of humanizing a very flawed person who realized his mistakes. I've been watching your videos for a while, but this one earned my sub and it deserves to go viral. Nice work man
  • I'd still say that he's better than Kai Chisaki at the parenting thing.

I never understood how that particular chapter with the family could be interpreted as 'oh now everything's fine. Horikoshi thinks everything is forgivven now' consdering that I think Endeavor ended that chapter saying himself, that he may possible never be nor can he be forgiven, so all he can do is try. None of the characters actually said anything about 'forgiving him' nevermind forgiving him completely. Even Fuyumi I think mostly argues that she doesn't want these things said NOW. She had talked and agreed with her brothers that they wouldn't bring up those things on that particula day, she never demanded of them that Natsuo 'get his shit together and forgive him'. Even when he's gone all she says is that she really hoped they could maybe come together as a family after Endeavor seemingly tryied to reconnect. She doesn't say that Natsuo or Shoto should forgive him nor does she even say that she forgave him herself, I think, she just says that she hoped the family could finally come back together again. In this room there was not a single character not Enji and not the children who actually said or even implied that 'everything was well and forgiven now'.

Endeavour: works to improve his public image and familial relationships to truly earn the title of Number 1 Hero Dabi: "I'm gonna do what's called a pro gamer move."

The whole "You like a problematic character means you're a bad person" debacle has the same energy as the "playing video games means you're a mass shooter" narrative boomers were pushing on millenials way back when. It's very tired
  • @mirror8519
Horikoshi: Really knows how to write good adult characters. Also Horikoshi: Makes a series about teens.

I was actually heavily abused by my stepdad growing up, but since he has changed and i have forgiven him, and i think a lot of people don't realize this is a thing that happens in the world, and maybe even more often than i think
  • @RexZor76
Endeavor is an amazing character. Him and Izuku are my two favorite characters. These two have had amazing character development. This is definitely one of the greatest shounen.
  • @Ari33sa
I actually think the first step of Horikoshi trying to humanize Endeavor is as early as Hosu. Of course back then it is only subtle, completely twisted and doesn't really lead anywhere because Endeavor has not yet actually changed ... at all. It's also very sublte because back then the focus of the whole story is not at all on Enji, or even Shoto at that point. But Hosu is in a way an attempt by Endeavor and Shoto to find common ground. The really twisted and awful but also human thing is, that Endeavor in Hosu actually seems to believe that if Shoto just saw him for the great hero he was, he might be able to understand. He brings his son to Hosu not just for them to train and to make Shoto stronger, but as he tells himself (though with different words) so that 'Shoto can see what a hero really is'. It honestly is not all that different to Endeavor then going to shoto much later and essentially telling him, 'watch me (be a hero)'. Of course Endeavor's real developement and humanization only started with All Might's behaviour, but I think Hosu was the first glimpse of Endeavor 'being human' ^^.(Interestingly Hosu was also about a villain fundamentally believing that people DO NOT change)

As much as I love this anime, some of the fans are cringy edge lords who really need to get out and get some fresh air.

Beautifully put together video overall. Honestly you brought up amazing points but one that stuck out to me was about the 'apologizing part' this is actually brought up quite a lot when it comes to Bakugo too. I see those that despise Bakugo despite his slow progress and say 'Well he hasn't apoligized to Deku so it doesn't matter how he changes' and in my head I think, well it's come to a point that apologizing won't help or change anything, and 2) I don't think Izuku considers himself a victim? And I could be wrong about that but he's never blamed Katsuki...so I dunno, I could be completly off! Anyway great great great stuff! So glad you posted!!
