American Cole Hocker pulled the upset of the Olympics on Tuesday night, beating his personal-best time by more than 3 seconds to outrace favorites Jakob Ingebrigsten and Josh Kerr for the title at 1,500 meters.

Hocker won the race in an Olympic record 3 minutes 27.65 seconds, pulling from fifth to first over the final 300 meters to take down the two runners whose rivalry dominated the buildup to the much-anticipated race.

Hocker, a 23-year-old product of University of Oregon, was listed as much as a 30-1 long shot for this race. He beat Kerr by .14 seconds, while Ingebrigsten, who set the pace through the first 1250 meters, ended up in fourth behind American Yared Nuguse.

don't forget that the top 3 finishers were within .15 seconds of one another. Top 4 finishers all broke the previous olympic record.
  • Gold and bronze in the 1500. That's unheard of for the US. Usually just dominant in the sprints. Well done Cole
  • Congratulations to both runners - that was some excellent racing!

Wow. What A RIDE! I WATCHED IT TWICE AND IM STILL OUT OF BREATH. Great Race.
  • That was an amazing race! The best I have ever seen. Hocker get blocked on the inside with about 100 meters to go stays on his inside line, gets an opening and squirts through! Incredible! I thought he was done when he he got blocked but he even became more determined. Truly a race for Olympic history
  • Incredible to watch what Hocker just did! There were so many moving pieces to this race. Incredible commentary portraying what will absolutely go down as one of the greatest races of all time!

Announcer doesn't know what he's talking about. He said Kerr was favored to win?

Kerr was not the favorite, Ingebritsen was.
  • Seems like the winner was determined to turn it into a contact sport. Not cool.
