As a public speaking teacher, I often think about the key components that make a masterful communicator. One of the most critical components that I talk about in my workshop is the connection between mind and instrument. When I say instrument, I mean your entire body, including your facial expressions, hand gestures, and body movements. Strengthening the connection between mind and instrument is crucial because it allows you to articulate with clarity every single time you communicate with another human being.

In this video, I discuss the two ways to strengthen the connection between mind and instrument. The first method is through deliberate practice, not just speaking more often. When you communicate with your parents, children, or partner, are you doing it deliberately or unconsciously?

The second method is to practice out loud. One of the biggest mistakes people make when preparing for a speech is practicing internally by reading the speech in their head.
