Actors Who Disappeared After One Huge Role

It can take an actor years to get their breakthrough role. Unfortunately, even when an actor lands a major role in a movie or TV show, that doesn’t necessarily mean that their career is guaranteed to take off.

It can be equally as grueling to stay on top of the acting world, because producers and studio executives always want the next big star. All it takes is one massive flop, and an actor's career is back to square one.

Some actors fizzle out after a few years at the top, and others are just one-hit wonders. Here are some actors who disappeared after one huge role.

  • It's a shame that Leonard Whiting's acting career didn't go as far. I bawled my eyes out at Romeo's death scene! He gave a very powerful performance as Romeo!
  • @sgillman16
Leonard Whiting had his body frozen and returned as Zac Efron

You forgot Avery Brooks was in Spencer for Hire as Hawk and in A Man Called Hawk.

Can't believe they didn't mention Jaye Davidson who was nominated for an Oscar for his performance in "The Crying Game". He had a memorable role in Stargate, but then disappeared from public eye. It's wierd that they wouldn't have had him on this list instead of a few here who actually have acting careers to this very day.

Carrie Henn?!?!?!?!?!?!?!? Newt From Aliens. She goes to many, many Comic Con, A proud and Very happy teacher. We all love her for it!

Leonard Whiting did a TV movie of Frankenstein in the 70s. It was really good.

Acting is such a competitive profession, in which having the right contacts is as much - if not more - important than talent.
  • So pleased to hear that George Lazenby has no regrets, thankful that his life turned out as it has, having the kids he has had. Rare for actors to be so at peace with their lives (after making a dreadful career mistake as pulling out of James Bond). Great to see.

Get your facts right! Mr. Brooks had a huge role before DS9. He was HAWK in TWO shows (spenser for hire, a man called Hawk), he did a lot of theater and he is musician too.

Jennifer Grey was also in the original "Red Dawn" as one of Ben Johnson's granddaughters. During the 1990s I heard of the Kevin Bacon game, where players would try to connect film actors to Kevin Bacon in 7 moves pr less. I felt that that was too easy, and liked John Wayne more, so I came up with the John Wayne game. I found that in spite of his having died in 1979 he has an incredibly large number of actors have a low number, even actors who weren't even alive when he died. For instance 1. Kevin Bacon has a cameo in "Trains, Planes, & Automobiles" with John Candy. 2. John Candy was in "Only the Loney" with Maureen O'Hara. 3. Maureen O'Hara was in " The Quiet Man", "McClintock", "Rio Grande", & "Big Jake" to name a few with John Wayne. Funny thing about "Rio Grande" though is that it also had Ben Johnson in it, giving Jennifer Grey, Patrick Swayze, & Charlie Sheen all JW numbers of 2. I said before there are actors who weren't alive yet when JW died who have 2s. Example is Haley Joel Osment. 1. He was in "Secondhand Lions" with Robert Duvall. 2. Robert Duvall was in "True Grit" with John Wayne, thereby giving HJO a 2.

Good for Ostrum. It’s not an easy thing as a kid to make a decision that could impact the rest of your life, especially when that decision goes against what most people that age would do. He seems like he’s living his dream and not someone else’s, plus graduating from Cornell is pretty big deal. And that stache is on point.

Jennifer Grey has 36 credits AFTER Dirty Dancing and she listed as an Actor who disappeared after one huge role???? So i guess being in television doesn't count then though they list others who have done some thing as small as voice acting . . i'm calling bullshit
  • @Gemnist98
I actually met Dan Lloyd at a Comic Con last year. He’s doing just fine, and wanted to tell the world that Full Metal Jacket is his favorite non-Shining Kubrick movie.
  • @jomama5186
This was really good. Brought back a lot of fond memories. Thank you !
  • @tayzonday
Avery Brooks was Rutgers faculty before DS9. He simply returned after the series.
  • It is so much better when actors leave the industry on their own accord, like Peter Ostrum. That is a much happier outcome than these former child actors with a tragic life story.
  • I always think of Omri Katz from Hocus Pocus. Did that and Eerie, Indiana, and a few small roles and the disappeared.
