How Gatorade was invented

Publicado 2021-10-25
History was made on October 2, 1965, changing the lives of four University of Florida scientists, an entire campus, the sports world, and eventually scores of people in need of organ transplants. That day, the scientists unveiled their invention: Gatorade.

Today, the sports drink is an iconic symbol of successful on the playing field, as winning football coaches are traditionally doused in sideline Gatorade bucket showers.

Back in November 2001, FOX 13's John Wilson sat down with Dr. Dana Shires, Dr. Jim Free, Dr. Alex de Quesada, and Dr. Robert Cade and talked to them about their extraordinary invention and Gatorade’s legacy.

The question is--- Is Gatorade the same today as it was back in 1966??? I remember drinking Gatorade in 1966 when I was mowing lawns in Pinellas County in the hot Florida sun. My neighbor gave it to me to drink instead of a soft drink when I was mowing his grass. It came in a glass bottle and had a sort of a weird lemon-lime taste, but it definitely quenched my thirst when I was mowing lawns. I remember that even though I would be sweating, I was no longer thirsty after drinking some Gatorade. That was 55 years ago. I hope that Gatorade is the same formulation today as it was back then.
  • I just add ALOT of water to it . Drink it VERY rarely. I like lemon lime and fruit punch flavors and grape and glacier cherry!

And now it is water, large amounts of sugar, and a tiny pinch of salt. It's what plants crave.

Gatorade seems more sugary than it did 50 years ago Pepsi swear that the formula hasn't changed but am I crazy.

Awesome to meet the guys behind Gatorade. I didn’t know Dr Cade was still living. Legendary men!
