SA SCHOOLS RUGBY IS WILD! | THE PAARL DERBY

The biggest rugby match in the world this week is between 2 local schools in South Africa. That, in itself is crazy. But a reality which helps explain the depth of passion for the sport and a culture which has led to 4 World Cup wins for the Boks. 2 former Springboks help me understand this fixture - former Paarl Boys High School Captain Corne Krige and former World Cup winner and Paarl Gimnasium alumni Kobus Wiese.

My thanks also to Thys Lombard for sharing his excellent photography. Thys does this for SA Schools Rugby and his work and contact can be found and supported here: www.instagram.com/thyslombard

  • Tim, we can comfortably anoint you as our "International Correspondence - Rugby Ambassador"

Even in neighboring Zimbabwe we wear our Boishaai jerseys and gather for braai & drinks as we watch this epic showdown.
  • Wow, sitting here in Paarl in my Gim jersey at work. Did not expect a video from Tim covering this epic encounter.
  • Tim, you are the best ambassador for SA in years! Thank you for that very special revue.
  • Absolutely amazing Tim. My son is currently on a flight heading to South Africa with the Merchiston School rugby team (best team in Scotland!). They have the privilege of actually attending this match tomorrow. Will be an unforgettable experience for all the boys.

Tim this is phenomenal. NOBODY has ever bothered to cover this, here you are from the UK covering it. I take my hat off to you. Thanks
  • I live in Paarl. The town closes down for the weekend. The trees on the Main Road are decorated in school colours. On Saturday the malls are empty, all the lodges and guesthouses are booked out. Shops sell cupcakes in Gim and Boys High colours. Absolute mayhem. The game is sold out..... Fantastic!!! Best part for me is that these are public schools, not expensive private schools. Hope to see you here next year Tim 🏉🏉🏉
  • @Tasmanian.
This is class. Another Eggchasers banger. I grew up playing schoolboy rugby in Leinster, so I get it. Those song practices will be with me forever. I think this tops it though, what an occasion.

I spent 8 years standing beside schoolboy rugby fields including the one highlighted here. In Cape Town Southern suburbs (the Englishmen's side of the Boerewors curtain). My boy went to Rondebosch Boys junior and high. We have our own massive interschool days, such as Rondebosch vs Bishops or SACS, over a hundred years of derbies. However when we cross the curtain to Paarl or Stellenbosch its often not a pretty sight. The apparent benefits of living on Boerewors becomes (sometimes painfully) clear. Atmosphere always electric.

Tim, as a South African I have loved your SA expose'. Now I would love for you to go to New Zealand and do the same thing for them as we would love to see their rugby culture through your eyes.
  • For a Safa, you made me also want to go down to Paarl to experience this major derby, thanks for your great show!!!
  • That's a statement you are the David Attemborough of the world of rugby! Stunning Job!
  • We love you TIM for supporting our country my home is not far away from PIERTEMARITSBURG BOYS COLLEGE .... RUGBY IS the religion in our country . we are proud of our boys
  • A million thanks for this one, Tim. Remember, you have a standing invitation to next year's Big Brag in the Paarl Town Hall. Oh yes, tomorrow is also my matric year's 50th reunion! It's gonna be awesome.

A world where respect is everything. And again thanks to the Moms and Dads, the "factory workers" who make all this happen.
  • Without a doubt the biggest derby in SA Schools, one of many. The third Paarl School , Boland Landbou is the rugby school that punches way above it's weight in SA. Paarl is truly blessed.
  • @karidutoit
You even have a lady Saffa who is watching all your videos! Thank you for promoting our country and people in such a great way. I believe that the international audience have a complete misconception of us. By default or by choice since we have won 4 World Cups. They can't stand the fact and thus they can't stand us too. They should also come and visit us to experience our warm and kind hearts for themselves. #ProudlySouthAfrican 🇿
