New!! Remove Background Using Layer Masks in PhotoDirector 10

Published 2019-01-11
A new feature that comes with PhotoDirector 10 is the masking feature. In this video I demonstrate how to remove a background by adding a layer mask first. Then, making a selection by using one of the various selection tools. With PhotoDirector 10, we are now able to save the selection & re-load it a later time, if we should need to modify it for any reason.

Another new feature of PhotoDirector 10 is the ability to add a solid color layer. When we choose this option, the layer automatically comes with a masking layer attached, so we can quickly change the color of the layer. This is super handy as well.

I have been looking for videos like this. Photo editing is complex, and most are just turbo speed editing and teach nothing... Thank you. I want to learn how to restore old photos....

Yes, another great video as others have commented here. Thank you. Using layer masks and removing backgrounds has at times been difficult and often contentious in older software and indeed in the days of using Photoshop. But Cyberlink have done a great job in Photodirector 10 by providing these awesome tools. But may I also congratulate you too for your excellent tutorial. How encouraging it is to view your videos and to see your professionalism in your production. I am now an avid user of Photodirector and find your tutorials very helpful. Keep up the good work !. Many thanks.

Thank you so much for your tutorials. I just purchased PhotoDirector and PowerDirector. I've since notice that there are very few tutorials for PhotoDirector. I'd love it is you could do a tutorial on the overall basics of PhotoDirector, like the starting the program and going through the basics of importing pictures, how to put them in albums, and what all the options mean. I don't know anything about photography and I'm trying to make an old low quality picture look better. Thanks!

¡Me encantó! Así podría editar el background original sin afectar los tonos de las personas. Muchas gracias

I like your tutorials. I have powerdirector but am thinking of getting the Director Suite. Can Photodirector do what Photoshop can
  • @malingehring165
You know, that to add a solid color background, I tried a dozen times and failed. Until I saw that to add a solid background you "selected" the original background, and not the "background copy"!! Then it worked!

Hi. Is it possible to contact you some how? I'm trying to do a cut out using your step by step tutorial, but my final images aren't clear as yours. Feather is everywhere... Just wanna find out what am i doing wrong?

WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN! lol, this is great. I needed to know how this works and you explained it thoroughly. Thank you. I do have a question though, I tried uploading in RAW (RAW2) format and my picture appears bronze-like (like a filter was on it)… why is that? I uploaded it on Photoshop/Lightroom (Mobile) and the image came out clear and natural looking. Any ideas or suggestions? I am using Photo Director 10.

This looks so easy ... I must be missing something and have tried at least 10 times. Your explanations are easy to follow. However, when I get to the point of selecting the background (solid color from the dropper) the entire image turns out to be that color. I have tried everything I know to and am not making progress on this issue. Also, how do I save this image so I can export as I do all other images. It is not showing in the bottom selection strip. Thanks!!!
  • @exectr82
I have probably missed something... Can you tell please, once you cut the background, how can I save a selected masked area as a picture, so I can use it on my web site without a background... Also how to save a final work with all the layers as one picture, so I can upload it after to the web please...

How can you pan and zoom in a photo. I can't find any tutorials. ProShow Gold shows you two images side by side and one has the starting point and the second you can make the square smaller or bigger and move the square so when viewing the image in a slide show, the starting area of the image is shown and then the image will "move" and "zoom" based on your settings. I can't find any such setting in Director 8. Does it exist??

Wow, I've been watching a number of your videos on area selection, and coming over from Photoshop, there's NOTHING about this that compares in any way. I'm just stunned, compared to the Select Subject tools of Photoshop, this thing is in the dark ages, sorry. I get more luck out of my old 1995 Corel Paint 6. Sadly, coming out of Corporate where I had ALL the Adobe products, just cannot pay to exorbitant fees for that. But even at this low price of this...this product is like yucko. Other tools that could help on selection, like find edges seems awol, as does trace contour, feather edges, grow and shrink mask, smoth edges. It doesn't even seem to have a point to point line selection tool instead of free-form. Wow. It would be one thing if one had hundreds of hours to tinker with this product, and tinker with pixel by pixel; but it is not user friendly like Photoshop, in any way, and while you do a great job, I am sorry. NOT for me!!!

I WANT TO SINCERELY THANK YOU FOR MAKING THESE STEP BY STEP EXERCISES... Cyberlink is CRAP with their "tutorials" with warp speed clicking of microscopic icons and no explanation.. I have subscribed and will watch all your videos.
