Cumbres and Toltec Narrow Gauge Railroad | September 2023

Published 2023-09-21
Here are a few clips from my September 2023 visit to the C&TTSRR featuring Denver & Rio Grande Western Narrow Gauge engines 484, 488 and 463.
Be sure to check out another video I produced in 2022 highlighting the beauty of both the railroad and the fall colors of north central New Mexico and south central Colorado.

The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad is a National Historic Landmark that moves. At 64-miles in length, it is the longest, the highest and most authentic Narrow Gauge steam railroad in North America, traveling through some of the most spectacular scenery in the Rocky Mountain West. To learn a bit more about the unique history of this railroad and its truly historic contribution to the development of northern New Mexico and southern Colorado, check the link below: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cumbres_and_Toltec_Scenic_ā€¦

I always enjoy watching the old western movies that this and the DSNGRR are featured in. Thanks for another scenic virtual train ride!

There's nothing better than a train. It's amazing to see them in action Ride That Tasty Wave
  • The train is so cool. This looks like it would be a lot of fun. Thank you for sharing Jerry.

Nothing says "out west" like an old steamer chugging up passes in CO. That, and we can still hear Clara screaming for Emmett over the whistle šŸ¤£
  • I love this railroad and have had the good fortune to ride it a few times. For a minimal charge they will drop you off at Cumbres Pass where the CDT crosses and saves from parking your vehicle in such a remote spot. This brought back memories. Thanks āœŒ

Quite well. The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad uses some amazing and cool narrow gauge 2-8-2 ā€œMikadoā€ steam locomotives right over here. Denver & Rio Grande Western 168 (Built by Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1883), 315 (Built by Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1895), 463 (Built by Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1903), 483, 484, 487, 488, and 489 (All built by Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1925), 492, 494, 495, and 497 (All built by Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1902, originally as standard gauge 2-8-0 ā€œConsolidationā€ steam locomotives until 1928 to 1930).
  • Great video keep up the good work! I would recommend picking up a dead kitten for your microphone. It will eliminate all that wind noise and make your sounds more crisp šŸ‘

Awesome train? My only question is how did you get on and off it for the shots LOL
