HONG KONG - Today we’re eating legendary seafood in Hong Kong, including the original Typhoon Shelter Crab!

Huge thank you to Virginia for helping me arrange this Hong Kong food tour. Check out her videos @hongkongfoodtours and her food tours: humidwithachanceoffishballs.com/

Ap Lei Chau Market (maps.app.goo.gl/AnU9QghRLHsBTRPQ7) - To begin this Hong Kong seafood tour we started off at Ap Lei Chau Market where we bought some fresh seafood before going upstairs to the food court. There’s an amazing restaurant at the top where they will cook your seafood, and it’s as fresh as possible, and extremely delicious.

Hing Kee Restaurant (maps.app.goo.gl/GdFtni2BgX6QDUby6) - We met up with Eugene, at his family restaurant where. His Grandfather originally cooked crab on a boat in Hong Kong harbor, and they made the original Hong Kong Typhoon Shelter Crab. The recipe has since evolved into a mountain of fried crispy garlic, but to my surprise the original recipe is mainly based on fermented black bean sauce. You have try both versions!

Sampan Boat Restaurant - Finally Virginia we had one more seafood restaurant this time, on a boat with the typhoon shelter of Hong Kong to get a glimpse of the real history.

Spoke to my parents last night, reminiscing about when we lived in Hong Kong (Kowloon Tsai) back in '77 to '79. We lived in a place which I think is now called Beacon Hill, which was off Cornwall Street, though the street names might have changed. We had a 3 bedroom apartment on the third floor of Exeter House, the first block of apartments up quite a steep hill. The fishman would knock on our door most week's on a particular day, carrying his wares on the classic baskets supported by a bamboo stave over his shoulder. He would fillet your fish on your doorstep, with a big smile. The school had a swimming pool, which we would swim in after school most days, given the weather was pretty warm all year round. Lion Rock, Ocean Park, Star Ferries, Dragon boat races in the harbour, lots of great memories, I haven't yet been able to revisit since, but it is definitely on my bucket list.
