I think for people like us (or Einar), our instinct would be to fight and hurt people only in self-defense, which is well and justified. But I think for Thorfinn and Thors, it goes a bit deeper than that. They've done their share of killing and hurting, they've taken and destroyed, for no reason at all. They have so much blood on their hands that to them is like an alcoholic saying: "it's okay to have a few drinks every once in a while, I don't have to swear off alcohol completely", but we all know the kind of snow ball effect that would have. If violence finds a way back as an option for Thorfinn, then he could easily continue spiraling down after a few "justified instances". So I definitely understand his vow and why he wants to take it seriously. It's also worth noting the brilliance of Yukimura choosing to deliver a pacifist message set in one of the most violent cultures and time periods in history — that's quite a challenge. If you think about it, taking a similar vow of pacifism in today's world really doesn't seem that complicated, and it's because of people like Thorfinn and Thors ,who dared to move against the flow, to think unconventionally and strive for something better that we have a world where violence actually seems to be a last resort, unlike the ancient times depicted in VS.

16:46 No, Thorfinn wasn't forced to go to war. Don't belittle his guilt, that's why this episode hit and he is in so much pain. He had a choice - but being an emotionally devastated child, that he was, he picked the bad/wrong one. But he could have chosen another path later on until it was too late.

"Oh my god!" "Oh my god!" "Oh my god!" Top tier reacting, lol.

I liked the scene where it shows that Thors carries the burden of those he killed with him while Thorfinn gets dragged down by them.
  • This is the nightmare he keeps forgetting, Einar wondered why he called out for his father and Askeladd and we got snippets of him falling down the cliff in previous episodes

I feel like what makes Vinland Saga so special is that it doesn't treat violence casually, it doesn't glorify war or the vikings for being cool or warriors. That first season is such a clickbait, but I'm also glad that the creator handled it the way he did. He showed you one side of the story and then in the farmland arc he showed you the other side. He showed that all actions have serious consequences. I love that about this show. Thorfinn's ptsd, the way it's portrayed. His internal battle of ideologies. Him realizing that all the people he has killed, all the innocent people warriors like him killed, are in fact... people. They're not just another face in the crowd. They had families, they had histories, they were REAL people with real emotions. I respect that he realizes all that and wants to atone for his sins. Vinland Saga is an amazing story, no doubt about that.
  • I can't get over how beautiful the character development is for Thorfinn. In his quest to avenge his father, he broke away from the family he still had (Helga and Ylva). The man that was once so full of seething anger and hatred; the man that killed and destroyed countless numbers of people and families he knew nothing about for the sake of revenge via an "honorable" duel with his father's killer, is now adopting a pacifistic stance and working on a farm to create rather than destroy. And it is through working on a farm, that he realizes more and more how horrible it was for him to have destroyed so much.

Thors might’ve been Thorfinn’s father but Askeladd’s that boy’s daddy for sure 😂😂🫡
  • This is where throfinns journey truly begins I love it sooo much

This episode made me so emotional, and I'm not typically the type to tear up when watching things but man this one got me. This episode is just a work of art, plain and simple. A story of growth and redemption for Thorfin trying to move past the unfortunate circumstances of his life and find peace. Thorfin, for better or for worse, seeing both of his father figures. Both trying to help him to forgive himself and move forward with his life. Both trying to save his soul from damnation. Beautiful.
  • @Killingglorie
in Thorfinns mind he sees Askeladd as his protector now
  • Its important to note that the whole event of askelaad in the "eternal war world" was in thorfinn's mind only

In Norse, the J is usually pronounced as a Y, so the proper pronunciation is Byorn (bee-yorn) Edit: technically, the name is actually Björn so it’s more accurately pronounced “bee-yērn” considering the umlaut (ö) but for American english it doesn’t really matter imo
  • Can#t believe they didnt made the connection that that was the dream that was teased for the last episodes and thought he was dying, really in hell or just having a random dream.

Farmland will probably end soon if Canute and Throfinn will cross paths again. Thats where I think this season is heading to. Not a spoiler I have no Manga knowledge 😂
