Orania The Whites Only Town In Post-apartheid South Africa!

South Africans went to the polls on 29th May - and the results were damning for the ruling African National Congress party, which has led the country since the end of apartheid 30 years ago. For the first time since 1994, its first election, the ANC failed to secure at least 50% of the vote (the threshold needed to form a government).

The drop in ANC support is seen as a verdict on its governance of the nation. Many Black South Africans accuse the government of not doing enough to dismantle apartheid-era socio-economic structures and injustices. Nothing exemplifies this better than the existence of Orania, a Whites-only town in the country's Northern Cape province.

The town has been a source of tension since its establishment in the early ‘90s during the last days of apartheid. The founders and the residents of the town claim its purpose is to preserve the culture and identity of the Afrikaner people, White South Africans of mostly Dutch, French and German descent.

However, many people think the town and its policy of not allowing non-White residents is nothing but a racist endeavour to maintain some vestiges of the apartheid system. The residents of the town insist that its existence is protected by Article 235 of the South African constitution, which guarantees self-determination. However, many have argued that the cited part of the constitution does not in fact permit people of a particular religious or cultural group to live in a secluded place away from other South Africans. In 2000, the Northern Cape High Court adjourned ‘sine die’ (without a further hearing date) after Orania’s proponents challenged attempts by the government to incorporate the town into the nearby municipal authority.

In 2019, Zamani Saul, the elected leader of the Northern Cape province, vowed to set up an inquiry to review the legality of Orania. His calls were backed by senior ANC official Panyaza Lesufi, who in 2020 stated that South Africa cannot move on from apartheid as long as places like Orania are allowed to exist.

African Stream was shown around Orania by some of the locals, who shared their opinions about their community with us. We’d love to hear yours as well in the comments.

But you cannot segregate yourself in my country and have a white only settlement. This is the same argument Israeli settlers are using to push out the indigenous Palestinians. Europeans have the gall

Since the land was taken from Africans, invite the Oranian state to relocate to Europe. There, they can be as exclusive as they like.
  • The government of SA and South Africans are entertaining this nonsense not only in Orania but also in Cape Town with the Cape independence led by a British man. in about 30 years Orania will fight to be an independent country within South Africa. The international community will support them and will put pressure on South Africa to give them independence and after that Cape Town will also follow. keep entertaining this nonsense

The last time i checked on a map, South Africa was not part of Belgium, the last time I checked South Africa does not have the same laws as Belgium or any other country where Muslims can have their own area. Surely the citizens of a country should abide by the laws of that country, or is Orania a state on its own?

History continues to repeat itself Settler colonialism is disgraceful.
  • If you guys can't live together, remember Africans didn't Borrow any land in Europe,

I am South African and this man is lying. This town (Orania) doesn't use the Rand. They have excluded Nelson Mandela from their curriculums, they laud and aplaud apartheid criminals such as Verwoed and Botha, and fly another flag -- one with the same colours as the Old SAF flag. And by the way, those "muslim neighbourhoods" he is speaking about - the geographical layout of the country in Johannesburg and Cape is the result of apartheid. He is also lying about those neighbourhoods being "no go zones" for the police.

No regard for any type of truth. They think if they step foot on a land, that it becomes theirs. The Most High will have the final say!

So sad.. A white only town in Africa..
  • @stewmaker3983
The ANC tolerated such segregation. Just look at where it has led them in the polls.
  • The fact that a whye sundown town exist in South Afrika is the reason why I can never accept that the ANC ended apartheid in South Afrika.
  • Weak AF for the SA govt to allow a segregationist community after the price that was paid to end apartheid
  • @AvelierPlays
Sure you can be in an African country as whites, but do so as integrated people to those countries and their culture. Just as Europeans keep demanding people from Africa or the Middle East to "integrate" to European "culture and values".
  • @VictorTheVan
I appreciate yall sharing this. His framing is so dishonest. No one is saying he can't live in South Africa because he's white, their saying that he can't make a segregated town for europeans in an African country with a recent history of apartheid. This seems so similar to zionist claims to Palestine or jim crow in the US; the idea that segragation is necessary for different groups of people to coexist.

Black South Africans are livid at their fellow Africans from Zimbabwe or Nigeria but u don't see them having the same energy towards this kind of racism.
  • @Ekofoyurittyt
But they will go burn down a Nigerian or Somali little shops while others wants to own 10% of their country by force they already own 70% of the resources
