Hampi - Malyavanta Raghunatha Temple - (Rama Lakshmana Ramayana)

Located on the main Hemalapura road, about a mile east of the Hampi turning, the Malyavanta Raghunatha temple is one of the most popular in the area. Still and active temple, it is the place where Rama and Lakhsmana waited until the monsoon was over before going to rescue Sita from Lanka.
Located on a rocky outcrop with excellent views of the surrounding area, it is the place to go at sunset if one is not able to reach Matanga Hill. From this vantage point one can see both Matanga Hill and Hanuman Hill - the birthplace of Lord Hanuman - and also many single standing temples in the foreground, although you have to look closely as they are often camouflaged within the boulder ridden terrain.
It was a bit windy on the day of my visit so there is some interference on the recording.
There are also some interesting carvings on the walls of the temple, predominantly sea creatures.

  • In Vijayanagara times, the direction the fish was looking showed people in which direction drinking water could be found.
