  • The football match indeed did happen. My maths/ latin teacher (when I was 8 years old in 1965) told us about it, and took part in the game. He was in his late sixties by then, but told us about the whole thing, and about how it was suppressed by the military high command. Fraternisation with the enemy could get you shot, and that was the charge to be made should the incident re-occur. God bless Mr Edwards...
  • The Sainsbury advert about the Xmas truce did happen in 1914. They did walk across no-mans land and exchange handshakes etc and they did play a game of football. The sad thing is as soon as the truce was over it was back to killing each other again.
  • The Sainsbury ad is made in collaboration with the Royal British Legion (The main British veterans charity) and is remarkably true to what happened. It is a very well documented event and the ad' was produced on the 100th anniversary
  • The last one in fact did happen. There are many eye witness written testimonies that the Brits and Germans did play football on Christmas Day in 1914. I think it was because they did not really know why they were fighting at all.
  • That grandpa was Polish, not Argentinian. He travelled to UK to see his son and to meet his grandson for the first time. Allegro commercial is kind of Polish eBay or Amazon.
  • My great- granddad fell at the battle of the Somme in 1918, leaving behind a son and a wife with no prospect of help. He did his duty. God bless all of the young men on all sides who gave their lives so we can talk.
  • The football game actually happened during the Christmas truce . The ball that was used is in a museum in the UK.
  • "Silent Night" is an old German hymn, adopted worldwide. The #1 ad is based on a genuine event, during WW1. It's that which makes it effective. If it can be done even for a short time there's hope. We're all part of one race...the HUMAN race.
  • The John Lewis advert with oasis playing half the world away is brilliant
  • In my opinion the Sainsbury's 2014 Christmas advert will never be beaten. As it is based on a true story, if it doesn't give you the feels then you must be dead inside.
  • The last advert is based on truth! They had a ceasefire for Christmas Day and they DID play football! This ad was in remembrance of the anniversary of WW1. The British supermarket Sainsbury’s recreated a chocolate bar that had been given to every soldier in service in 1914. This is the chocolate bar that you see in the advert. They sold it in their stores and the profits (or a portion there of) went to the British legion, which is a charity that looks after ex servicemen and women and their families.
  • @mral8145
I was thinking, “these adverts are lovely, but they’re not making me cry”. Then a sad looking teddy bear comes on the screen 😭
  • I’ve read many WW1 diaries which also describe each side singing silent night to each other over the early years of the war. There’s always a little man sweat below my eye when I see that advert.
  • The ball that was used is in a museum in the UK! Amazing story
  • @Pi_r8
Not a single tear shed for the poor Ostrich 😢
  • I new ours would be number one and yes your right this was the First World War when the Brits and Germans stopped on fighting on Christmas Day and played football and celebrated for just one day and gifts 🎁 was exchanged They were very young the men who fought in that war and we lost millions of men ,but this commercial just shows how we all want peace we make brilliant Christmas commercials in the UK but this has to be number one Merry Christmas to you both and your families love 💕 from Denise in Yorkshire England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🙏🎁🎅🏼🎉🎄👍😘
  • The Sainsbury (supermarket) ad is one of many that the company produce for Christmas. It's worth watching the others they've done. .And John Lewis Christmas ads. Some are very moving.
  • Daniel! You hard-hearted toughie! At least Spencer has the grace to admit to a teary eye! Great video and yes the Army Soccer match DID take place.
