Friday Favorites: Are There Benefits to Pole Walking for Weight Loss?

Published 2024-06-21
Does walking with poles, also known as Nordic walking or “exerstriding,”, beat our regular walking for depression, sleep quality, and weight loss?

This research was done for How Not to Diet (nutritionfacts.org/how-not-to-diet/), but given the results of the studies, it never made the cut. However you walk, though, there are a lot of benefits. Check out Longer Life Within Walking Distance (nutritionfacts.org/video/longer-life-within-walkin….

When I go backpacking, trekking poles help to keep me from faceplanting on the trail!
  • Having poles while walking or hiking can make it safer and more comfortable for the obese, older people, and accident prone. On uneven surfaces it’s a second chance save from a bad fall.
  • I have been walking with "Activator Poles" a few times a week for a few years. I "hall walk" daily too in my apartment building. Walking inside leaves me with no excuses...raining, too cold, too hot. Age 74 female.
  • Lovely topic, thanks for the talk! Especially at 5:07 - to hear that Nordic Walking can improve sleep quality made it worth watching.
  • It seems like Nordic walking would tend to make people who feel infirm or unstable walk more. That's a definite plus.

Walking with poles is not the only way to burn more calories vs. walking alone. Rucking (walking while carrying a weighted backpack or wearing a weight vest) is also a very good way to burn more calories if you have limited time to spend on exercise. Better yet, combine both hiking poles and weighted backpack and walk at a brisk pace in the woods give you multiple physical and emotional benefits all at once.

Pain. Chronic, severe, undertreated pain keeps me from moving as much as I wish.

I always listen to podcasts on my long walks :D and I also really enjoy starting my day with yoga :) finding what movement you enjoy is key ^^ thank you for sharing <3

Dr Greger, can you advice on how to build decent muscles on Vegan diet? I don't seem to see any vegans having adequate amount of muscles. Most look sick and frail. I'm worried about loss of muscles and bones due to lack of good quality protein
  • If they are the same weight with more lean mass, then it should be just as good as weight loss because it means they lost fat

190, 61 year old. I walk 2 hours a day. I don't own a tv. Who cares if its enjoyable?! Thats a stupid criteria for health. Be unhealthy for awhile. THAT is unpleasant. I was 322 in 2021. I use a walker in the basement daily. Walking works. Laziness is a death sentence.

Cycling makes you happy. So cycling for transportation is a three-fer. You cut CO2 emissions, you improve your physical health, and you improve your mental health. This is a far superior aspiration than to try to get people to exercise for the sake of exercise only.
  • Then there's the Tarahumara, Mexican Indians, who run for miles just for the enjoyment of it.
